The NDT report

An NDT report (non-destructive testing) is the deliverable of an inspection: ultrasonics and thickness measurements (UT), radiography (RT), penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle (MT), visual testing (VT) or eddy current (ET). It holds numerical measurements, indications, defect locations, a severity rating and, often, a re-inspection deadline. It is dense technical data, produced by certified technicians, instrument in hand.

The problem is not the quality of the testing: it is done, and done well. The problem comes afterwards. The report lands in a network folder, an email attachment or a local desktop, in a layout specific to each provider. The thickness measurement of a precise nozzle, taken two years ago, exists. But finding it and comparing it with this year's means reopening each PDF by hand.

In most sites, using NDT reports rests on a spreadsheet and the teams' memory. The inspection manager opens the PDFs received, copies the measurements that matter into a tracking sheet, notes the open findings, then works out the next deadlines by hand. What the shift from scattered PDFs to tracking looks like

Take a multi-site operator whose pressure equipment and piping are inspected by several NDT providers. Over a year, the reports arrive in different formats: thickness measurements in tables for some, in-house layouts for others. You drop the whole set into the software. Regulatory framework

Centralising NDT reports helps directly with meeting in-service monitoring obligations. In France, the order of 20 November 2017 governs pressure equipment: it requires an operating file per piece of equipment and sets periodicities, with a periodic inspection at most every six years and a requalification in principle every ten years, brought down to six years for a corrosive fluid. The tracking produced by the software helps keep this register up to date, gathers findings by asset and makes deadlines visible before they arrive. The certification of NDT technicians is a matter for COFREND under the EN ISO 9712 standard; COFRAC accredits COFREND. The software never intervenes in the qualification of technicians.

In the United States, mechanical integrity relies on the in-service inspection codes API 510 (vessels), API 570 (piping) and API 653 (tanks), and on the requirement for mechanical integrity records under the OSHA Process Safety Management program.
